Games in Learning: Advantages And
Disadvantages?
21st century becomes a turning point of
an innovative era. Everything has began its modernisation, just like method of
teaching. Teaching on 21st century should be innovative or it will
create monotonous in classrooms’ atmosphere which cause to students’ enthusiasm
in learning. Games, as one of instruments in education, could be one of the
innovative things with its high varieties of games that are flexible for all
ages. But what we underline here is the games have more advantages or
disadvantages?
To get back to what I was saying previously, let us
see the advantages of apllying games in teaching and learning process. First,
games could create students’ participatory more active and it will motivate and
challenge them in a learning process. Second, it provides intense and
meaningful practice in all skills. Third, it could be one of the welcome break
from the usual routine of the language class which also means games as a
relaxation for the students. Furthermore, games could encourage students to
interact and communicate with each others that will rise their social
connections.
Nevertheless, games in learning not always have
advantages. It also have some disadvantages as follows. First, games could decrease
students’ attention span. Many experts believe that the fast pace
and immediate feedback creates a problem
with students’ attention span. Students may begin to expect the same kind of
responses from all parts of their education and when they can’t find it then it will lead them to a
frustration. Second, games could be so costly. Third, it
will spend your time fastly if you are not a good time-keeper.
To put the whole in a nut shell, I personally think
that applying games in learning is a good choice despite of its disadvantages,
as long as the teachers have a clear of explanation of how to play the games
and it is suit with the material on that day, not being so costly and paying on
attention of the times used.
